Dealing with an Aggravated Employee - Spark Hire
Dealing with an Aggravated Employee - Spark HireWhen youre a boss, you get all kinds of employees working for you. As the saying goes, everyone is a snowflake. No two people are identical. That means that in any large group of people youll have a variety of types. Luckily, the majority of them are okay with handling day to day life. But every now and then you might come across someone who has had enough and is feeling like nothing would please him or her more than to make a scene. How do you deal with hostile people, especially in the workplace? Read on to find out.The first step of any potentially hostile situation is to isolate the person. While you can learn this from almost any procedural cop show or movie, it isnt common knowledge. See if you can coax the employee to come with you into a conference room or your office on the grounds that you would like to hear them out. Make sure you let them know, or at least make it seem like, you are interested in what they have to say.Once i n the conference room/office/broom closet, just talk to them. Sometimes people just have a bad day and need to vent. Let them say their piece or have their tantrum and then go from there. Let them take the rest of the day off and say youll discuss things tomorrow. Its important that you dont imply that you will be reprimanding them tomorrow or that you tell them to go cool off. Say it as a suggestion, not as a demand. Also wait until theyve calmed down before suggesting they take the day off, some people might get even more agitated if theyre enflamed when they hear this. Now heres the other scenario that could happen the employee becomes hostile. I dont mean hostile in a violent way (although this could certainly apply to that, too) but in an uncooperative, wont listen to the slightest shred of reason sort of way. If it comes to this it is no longer part of your job description to personally handle the employee. Let the employee know you are calling security (or police, if you dont have security) if they dont settle down. If this doesnt work, then do it. Dont think twice, just call in the fuzz. If theyre unresponsive to reason and rationale then dont respond with reason and rationale. Everyone takes police seriously. If the employee sees that police were called they might realize how overboard theyve gone and itll sober them up. If they dont, at least you have people trained to deal with it there.Hopefully it never comes to calling in police, but you have to be ready just in case. If theyre seriously disrupting the workplace then they need to be dealt with. Just make sure to gauge whether its your job to intervene or not theres no point in endangering yourself needlessly in a hostile situation.Have you ever dealt with a hostile or aggravated employee in the workplace? How did you handle the situation? Tell us in the comments below.IMAGE Courtesy of Flickr by victoriapeckham

The Island of Misfit Toys
The Island of Misfit ToysThe Island of Misfit ToysThis classic Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer first aired in 1964 and introduced us to Hermey, the elf who wants to be a dentistBoss Elf gives Hermey grief over his desired career path. It seems Boss does not understand the inner elf.Later on, Hermey lands on the Island of Misfit Toys. The islands misfits - a Charlie-in-the-Box, a bird that swims, a cowboy who rides an ostrich - also dont match up with the expectations we have for them.Of course, the show ends on a happy note, and I suppose the glaubenszeugnis of the Island of Misfit Toys and of Hermey the Elf / Dentist is that were all a fit someplace. And its the same for your career.I cant tell you how many times my best advice for someone seeking career guidance has been to ask what do you want to do? followed by well, why dont you go do that?More often than not, they know what they want to do just like Hermey the Elf, they already know what would make them happier. So youd think it would be easy. But when I ask why dont you do that, Ill hear a litany of reasons without rationale my family doesnt think its prestigious enough, well, I could never just get up and move like that, or I dont know what people would think of me if I did thatAnd this is the hard part, because the fruchtwein difficult opponent youll face in your career is yourself.Your excuses.Your rationalizations.Your reasons why you shouldnt even try.And its conquering yourself, and overcoming your doubts, and beating your own fears and anxieties and limitations, that will lead you to having the career and life that you deserve. So in response to each reason why you cant do it, ask the person in the mirror and replyThat doesnt matter, go do what you want., orThats not really true, why dont you go do what you want?, orOk, but if youve only got a few decades left on this earth, why not go do what you want?Over and over and over.In most cases, youll eventually convince yourself. And you can finally become the dentist youve always wanted to be instead of staying an elf.Have a terrific Christmas week, ReadersIm rooting for you.p.s.
